A lonely stretch of road near Lampang, surrounded by forest, has long been a notorious dumping ground for unwanted dogs. Currently, well over 300 dogs compete for space and food to survive in this area. This leads to frequent fights and injuries due to road accidents.
Several months ago, we were approached by a group of students to help improve the welfare of these animals. Due to the size and geography of this challenge, weeks of surveying, planning and coordination with the relevant authorities and communities was required, to design an effective plan to catch, sterilize, vaccinate these dogs. If successful, the population will decrease and the quality of life of these dogs will improve significantly.
With the Forestry Commission, we’ve created bamboo enclosures, which the dogs are now being regularly fed in. This will help them become comfortable with the enclosures, and allow our catching teams to safely collect the dogs for surgery. Progress will be monitored in real time, through our unique mobile application which WVS created in 2013, and which is now in use by animal welfare groups around the world.
