Coming home from dinner on a sweltering August evening, one of our team members spotted three tiny, exhausted bundles of fur, staggering around the entrance to his muban. On further investigation, they turned out to be little Chihuahua dogs, left there shortly before, according to security staff.
The next day, the WVS vet team discovered that Gizmo, Sophie and Buffy were all extremely malnourished, crawling with fleas and suffering from an array of skin, eye and blood parasite infections. In addition, Buffy also had a deep flesh wound on her face. There were strong indications that they were dumped by a heartless breeder, after they had outlived their usefulness.
Initially, all three seemed to make a strong recovery and they quickly became the little darlings of the Rescue Center team.
Gizmo and Sophie shared an extremely close bond and we decided that, no matter what, they needed to stay together. Upon hearing their story, HE Remco van Wijngaarden, the Dutch Ambassador to the Kingdom, and his husband Carter traveled to Chiangmai with their eldest daughter, to offer these two a loving home at the end of their still ongoing treatment.
At the same time Whitney and Cameron, long-time supporters of our work, opened their hearts and home to Buffy, the most confident and independent of the three.
Alas, nothing ever runs perfectly to plan in animal welfare, and little Sophie suddenly took a turn for the worse. With a loving home already awaiting her, she quickly succumbed to a distemper infection. She must have been harboring this deadly virus before our vaccinations could protect her.
Nevertheless, Gizmo has now settled in beautifully with his loving family, on the gorgeous and expansive embassy grounds, attempting to dominate lovable Labrador JinJin.
Meanwhile, Buffy is thriving with her family, including her new canine partner Roger. As you can see she’s even sporting a whole new look, to celebrate her new life!
We are so grateful to these families, as well as all the others who continue to support our work and provide happy-ever-after stories for many of our rescues!
