Canine Distemper is a highly infectious and life-threatening disease which is very prevalent in our area. With the change of seasons we currently see a sharp uptick in cases. The virus that causes distemper can easily spread among dogs through sneezing and coughing (droplets), as well as indirectly through contaminated surfaces.
There is no cure for distemper. With intensive supportive veterinary care some dogs and, to a lesser degree puppies, can survive. But even survivors are often left with permanent neurological issues, such as seizures, tremors or nerve damage.
Early symptoms of distemper include red and/or watery eyes and nasal discharge. Infected dogs will often become lethargic and lose their appetite. They may also suffer from vomiting, diarrhea, as well as coughing and sneezing.
While distemper is extremely dangerous to dogs, it is also very easy to prevent through vaccinations. Combination vaccines that cover distemper, the equally dangerous parvovirus, and several other common pathogens are highly effective, affordable and available at virtually every vet clinic.
So please, for the sake of your beloved pets and your community, vaccinate your dogs. If you suspect your dog may be infected, immediately separate him/her from other dogs and contact your veterinarian immediately for further guidance. Quick screening tests are widely available and quite reliable.
Thank you!
